Just an American millennial living in Santorini, Greece. Most of you know me as Laura, LB, Laura B., or some other variation of Laura Burgess.
I was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina in November 1989 to two wonderful parents, Richard and Peggy, and an older sister, Meredith. My childhood was simple and easy, spending my free time hanging out with friends, playing make-believe and dress-up, riding bicycles, climbing trees, swimming, and watching Saved by the Bell. I am 26 now and my interests have varied only slightly and include listening to music, writing, reading, people watching, and running.
I graduated from NC State in the summer of 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, and putting my degree to good use, I started working as a server at a tequila bar. That’s not to say I wasn’t looking for “real” jobs. After about nine months of that gig, I quit, panicked, and five days later with the help from a friend, I started a job as Office Coordinator at a financial services company in Raleigh in September of 2013.
Then, after my mother passed away suddenly in August of 2014, I put in my two weeks notice in early December. The death of my mother changed my whole perspective on life. It taught me that my time on this planet isn’t guaranteed in any way and that life is too short so I shouldn’t be wasting time on things I don’t want to do (i.e. working for a financial services company). My mother valued her time more than anyone. It was so important to her and I realize now how right she was.
So, that’s when I came up with the plan to leave the town I grew up in and travel for 6-months. I always wanted to travel for an extended period of time and that combined with the fact I seriously needed time to grieve, I set out for Europe. It really is the perfect continent to travel because there are endless places to see, people to meet, cultures to experience, and not to mention the ease of travel from country to country.
I traveled ALL over, starting in Spain, heading to Portugal, then to the South of France, Italy, Amsterdam, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Croatia, Greece, and more. Woo! What a journey it has been. I had the time of my life, exploring new cities and adapting to new cultures, meeting old and new friends, and simply expanding my world. I ended up meeting someone in Santorini and decided to stay. So here I am now, living in Greece on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
I call myself a full-time traveler, dreamer, thinker, observer, and writer. With you, I share my experiences, good and bad, past and present, places I’ve been and pictures to see, relationships, friendships, and why I do the things I do. Follow Laura Hamburgers for a day in the life of…me.
